ORTHOTICS:

Orthotics deals specifically with bracing weak or ineffective joints or muscles through the use of an orthosis. An orthosis is designed to support the spine, a weakened or disabled limb, or a limb in post–operative condition. Similarly,  pedorthotics addresses issues with the foot and ankle.

We often treat people with spinal cord injuries (SCI), stroke, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spina bifida, and cerebral palsy.

Examples of Orthoses

Orthotics Services Explained

To be seen, a patient must first have his or her condition evaluated by a physician who writes a prescription for an orthosis.

Evaluation
The orthotist completes an evaluation, which includes taking a relevant history, measurements, and an impression, as necessary.

Fabrication
In our lab,
the orthotist prepare the patient’s orthosis through total custom fabrication or revision or adjustment of stock items.

Fitting and Instruction
The Orthotist evaluates function, fit, and comfort when fitting each patient’s orthosis. Patients are provides with basic instructions on how to use and care for the orthosis. If necessary, a therapist may give additional help and training.

Adjustments
Each individualized orthosis may require adjustments to get the orthosis to fit just right. This process requires teamwork between the patient and orthotist. Adjustments or replacements may be needed as the patient grows, ages, or experiences changes in physical condition or lifestyle.
